Vreden, Roman Romanovich

Born Mar. 9 (21), 1867, in St. Petersburg; died Feb. 7, 1934, in Leningrad. Soviet orthopedic surgeon.

Vreden graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 1890. In 1906 he organized and became the director of the first orthopedic institute in Russia, the St. Petersburg Orthopedic Institute. At the same time he was professor of orthopedics at the Psychoneurological Institute (from 1911) and at the First Leningrad Medical Institute (from 1918). He developed surgical methods for treating orthopedic deformations and illnesses (flat foot, spinal curvature, and others) and first performed arthrodesis, thighbone metaplasia, and other operations. Vreden believed that active surgical intervention was necessary in injuries to the skull and backbone and that splints should be used in treating fractures of the jaw.
