Romanovskii, Vsevolod Ivanovich 

Born Nov. 22 (Dec. 4), 1879, in Alma-Ata; died Oct. 6, 1954, in Tashkent. Soviet mathematician. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR (1943).

Romanovskii graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1906. Between 1911 and 1915 he was first a docent and then a professor at Warsaw University. He became a professor at the Don University in Rostov in 1915 and at the Middle Asian University in Tashkent in 1918. Romanovskii’s principal works dealt primarily with mathematical statistics and probability theory; he obtained important results on Markov chains. He also wrote on mathematical analysis, particularly the integration of partial differential equations. Romanovskii made an important contribution to the training of national scientific specialists in the Uzbek SSR. The Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR has been named after him.
