Romodanovskii, Grigorii Grigor’evich

Year of birth unknown; died May 15 (25), 1682. Russian statesman and military figure of the 17th century; boyar (from 1665). Prince.

As a member of V. V. Buturlin’s embassy in 1653, Romodanovskii participated in the Pereiaslav Rada of 1654. From 1654 to 1656 he was a voevoda (military commander) of the Russian Army in the war against Poland. As head of the Belgorod section of the Razriadnyi Prikaz (War Office), Romodanovskii played a prominent role in organizing the defense of Russia’s southern border. He also headed the Sevsk and Novgorod sections of the prikaz. Romodanovskii actively interfered in the election of hetmans, securing candidates acceptable to Russia, such as Briukhovetskii and Mnogogreshnyi. Romodanovskii commanded troops during the Chigirin Campaigns of 1677–78 and then served at the court. He was killed during an uprising in Moscow.
