Roosevelt, Nicholas

Roosevelt, Nicholas (1767–1854) engineer; born in New York. He was a pioneer in steam navigation, first building a model boat in 1782 propelled by side-paddle wheels turned by springs. He later established a foundry and in 1798 built a steamboat there. In 1811 he and Robert Fulton built the New Orleans, the first steamboat on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
