| Bird and his colleagues noticed that when they put root-knot nematodes near the roots of lotus plants, the root hairs branched and curled as if the roots had been introduced to rhizobia instead. ``We cut a wrist-size root, and, when we checked it about a month later, it had produced root hairs, which indicates the tree is very healthy,'' Newman said, adding that other tests revealed the wood was solid throughout the tree. The medicinal part of ginseng is the dried main root and the lateral roots and root hairs. |
