Rosetti, Alexandru 

Born Oct. 20, 1895, in Bucharest. Rumanian linguist. Academician of the Rumanian Academy of Sciences (1948); Honored Scholar.

Rosetti graduated from the University of Bucharest in 1920 and from the College of Historical and Philological Sciences. He studied in Paris from 1920 to 1928. He became a professor at the University of Bucharest in 1932 and was rector of the university from 1946 to 1948. He has been director of the Center of Phonetics and Dialect Researches since 1963. His main areas of research are the history, etymology, and dialectology of Rumanian, literary Rumanian and its history, Balkan studies, general linguistics (phonetics and phonology, grammar, and lexicology), textology, the stylistics of literature, and the history of linguistics. Rosetti has published works on linguistic geography and mathematical linguistics. He has edited many linguistic journals, among them Bulletin linguistique, Studiişi cercetāri lingvistice, and Foneticāi dialectologie. He received the State Prize of the Rumanian Socialist Republic. He is an honorary member of many foreign academies of sciences.
