Iurenev, Rostislav Nikolaevich
Born Mar. 31 (Apr. 13), 1912, in Vitebsk. Soviet motion-picture critic and scholar. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1969); doctor of the arts (1961). Iurenev graduated from the department of script writing of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. He began writing in 1930. From 1948 to 1973 he was engaged in scholarly research at the Institute of Art History, and in 1973 he began working at the Scientific Research Institute of Motion-picture Theory and History. Iurenev is the author of several chapters of the book Essays on the History of Soviet Cinema (vols. 1–3), the monographs Aleksandr Dovzhenko (1959) and The Film Director Evgenii Cherviakov (1972), and such theoretical works as Soviet Comedy Film (1964) and A Short History of Soviet Cinema (1967). He also wrote the scripts for the documentaries Sergei Eisenstein (1958), Vsevotod Pudovkin (1960), The Birth of Soviet Cinema (1968), and Cinema Talks About Itself (1969). In 1939 he began teaching at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography, becoming a professor in 1963. Iurenev has been awarded three orders and several medals.
