The Madagascar periwinkle plant from which the anticancer compounds vinblastine and vincristine are derived.

For example, as recently as the 1980s, the plant rosy periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) gave rise to two important drugs, vinblastine and vincristine, which are used to treat Hodgkin's disease and childhood leukemia, respectively.
He uses one drug--an extract from the endangered rosy periwinkle plant--to treat young cancer patients.
One native herb, for example, the rosy periwinkle, has been found to be an effective treatment for childhood leukaemia and Hodgkin's disease, according to an article in Choices, the magazine of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
