rotoscopingCreating animated characters by tracing an action movie with real actors frame by frame. Performed via the computer today, rotoscoping was originally accomplished in the early 1900s by projecting each movie frame onto a frosted glass easel, from which the illustrator traced and redrew the image. At least there's more action here than in that rotoscoped misfire. This brings us--skipping a few less wonderful movies--to A Scanner Darkly (which opens nationally in July), Linklater's second rotoscoped feature of liveaction footage rendered into Disney-esque artifice via proprietary software updated since Waking Life. He has used discarded rotoscoped mattes created while working on various film productions and incorporated them into his symphonic animations as sensual shapes that dance across the frame and dissolve into additional original animations. |
