Roubaix (rbā`), city (1990 pop. 98,179), Nord dept., N France, in French Flanders. Part of the Lille urban area, Roubaix, with adjacent Tourcoing, is one of the largest textile (chiefly wool) centers in France; a national textile school is there. It was occupied by the Germans during World Wars I and II.

Roubaix 

a city in northern France, in Nord Department. Population, 115,000 (1968). Together with the cities of Lille, Tourcoing, and others, Roubaix forms a single agglomeration (population, 881,000). Long a major center for the wool (spinning and weaving), cotton-cloth, and knitwear industries, Roubaix has clothing factories. There is lace production and the manufacture of textile machinery.
