From 1940 to 1947, Rougemont lectured in the United States, where he wrote La Part du diable [The devil's portion] (1944), about the European crisis of conscience. He also wrote the psychological-historical study L'Amour et l'occident (1939; tr. Love in the Western World, 1956).
