Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi (rô`vänē'ĕmē), city (1996 pop. 57,389), capital of Lapland prov., N Finland, at the confluence of the Ounas and Kemi rivers. Commercial and agricultural fairs and winter sports events are held in the city. Located just south of the Arctic Circle, it is the starting point of the Great Arctic Highway. Rovaniemi was chartered in 1929. Retreating German troops destroyed it (1944) in World War II. The rebuilt town features a design by Alvar Aalto Aalto, Alvar (ŏl`vär äl`tō), 1898–1976, Finnish architect and furniture designer.

1 "The Snow Show" (Kemi and Rovaniemi, Finland) I would have used any excuse to visit the Finnish Lapland town of Rovaniemi, where Alvar Aalto's stunning municipal buildings stand, but "The Snow Show," curated by Lance Fung there and in Kemi, provided architecture of an even more native variety--ice and snow structures by Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, and others, their medium harvested from local lakes and engineered by Finnish master ice-builder Seppo Makinen.
Blue1 will open a new route from Helsinki to Rovaniemi in Lapland Jan.
The product of that experiment is the Snow Show, which is on view through March in Kemi and Rovaniemi, two remote towns in Finnish Lapland.
