Roving Frame

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus 0.01 sec.
Roving Frame

a machine used in spinning to form roving. Depending on the type of fiber and the thickness of the roving, these machines may vary in the working principle of the drafting devices, the dimensions of the flyers, spindles, and bobbins, and the method of forming the roving (by twisting with a spindle or by rubbing). In a cotton roving frame, for example, the sliver is supplied from sliver cans, passes around a feed roller, and is fed to the drafting device. It then passes through an eyelet, a hollow leg, and the pressure finger of the flyer, which is mounted atop the spindle, and is then wound onto a bobbin in the form of roving. Spindles may have rotation speeds up to 800 rpm. In the French system of spinning wool, the roving is formed by means of rubbing sleeves.
