Rowton, Montagu William Lowry Corry, 1st Baron

    0.02 sec.
Rowton, Montagu William Lowry Corry, 1st Baron (rôt`ən, rou`–), 1838–1903, English philanthropist. He was called to the bar in 1863. From 1866 until 1881 he served as private secretary to Disraeli, who recommended him for the title of Baron Rowton (1880) and made him his literary executor. Lord Rowton became interested in London housing conditions and promulgated a scheme for a pauper's hotel, which was opened in Vauxhall in 1892. Its success led to the formation of a company that constructed a number of similar establishments, known as Rowton Houses.
