Roy, Maurice 

Born Nov. 7, 1899, in Bourges, department of Cher. French scientist specializing in mechanics. Member of the Academy of Sciences of France (1949; correspondent, 1935).

Roy graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris and subsequently taught at the National School of Bridges and Highways (1926–46), the National Higher School of Aeronautics (1930–40), and at the Ecole Polytechnique (1947–69). He has served as director general of the French National Office of Aeronautical Research (1949–62) and president of the Committee on Space Research of the International Council of Scientific Unions (1962–72).

Roy’s principal works deal with hydrodynamics, aerothermodynamics, general thermodynamics of mechanisms, and the dynamics and stability of aircraft operation. He has conducted fundamental theoretical research on jet engines.

Roy is an honorary member of the American National Academy of Sciences (1964), the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the British Aeronautical Society. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by a number of universities in Europe and America.
