Roy Chowdhury, Devi Prasad
Born in August 1899 in Rangpur. Indian painter, graphic artist, and sculptor. Roy Chowdhury studied with A. Tagore and in London. He was the director of the State School of Arts and Crafts in Madras from 1928 to 1958 and the president of the National Academy of Arts from 1954 to 1960. Roy Chowdhury’s work, which transforms the traditions of national art into a realistic idiom, is characterized by drama and movement. His paintings are noted for their sensitive palette and, frequently, for a romantic rendering of images. The artist’s striving to convey directly his impressions of life is best reflected in his sculpture. Examples of Roy Chowdhury’s work are When the Rains Begin (tempera, 1940’s), Portrait of R. Tagore (pastel), and the monument In Memory of the Martyrs (in Patna, Bihar State). The artist sculptured numerous portraits. REFERENCETiuliaev, S. I. Iskusstvo Indii. Moscow, 1968.
