Riobamba (rēōbäm`bä), city (1990 est. pop. 95,505), capital of Chimborazo prov., central Ecuador, near Chimborazo Chimborazo , inactive volcano, 20,577 ft (6,272 m) high, central Ecuador; the highest in Ecuador. Its summit is always snowcapped. First explored by Alexander von Humboldt in 1802, it was first scaled in 1880 by Edward Whymper.

It was founded c.1530 and was completely destroyed by earthquake in 1797. The convention that proclaimed Ecuador's independence from Greater Colombia met there in 1830. The city's manufactures include textiles and ceramics. It has an open-air market where indigenous artisans display their wares. Riobamba a city in western Ecuador; located in the Andes, on the Pan American Highway; capital of Chimborazo Province. Population, 53,700 (1970). There is a railroad station in Riobamba. The city is a commercial center of an agricultural region where there is pasture livestock breeding and grain growing. There are textile, food-processing, and footwear enterprises in Riobamba.
