Selkirk, town, CanadaSelkirk, town (1991 pop. 9,815), SE Man., Canada, on the Red River. Just S of Lake Winnipeg, it is a port for products from N Manitoba. There are steel mills, foundries, and shipyards in the town. Selkirk Alexander. original name Alexander Selcraig. 1676--1721, Scottish sailor, who was marooned on one of the islets of Juan Fernández and is regarded as the prototype of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe Selkirk a mountain range in the inner belt of the Cordilleras of Canada and the USA, part of the Columbia Mountains. Approximately 500 km long, the Selkirks are composed primarily of Precambrian massive crystalline rocks. The mountains reach 3,532 m in elevation on Mount Sir Sanford. The peaks are covered with snow and glaciers, and the slopes with alpine meadows and coniferous forests. The range has deposits of complex metals. Glacier National Park is located in the Selkirks.
