Rozanov, Matvei Nikanorovich 

Born Nov. 26 (Dec. 8), 1858, in Moscow; died there Oct. 20, 1936. Soviet Russian literary scholar. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1921). Brother of I. N. Rozanov.

Rozanov graduated from Moscow University in 1883. From 1911 to 1929 he was a professor at Moscow University. His chief works were Poet of the “Sturm und Drang” Period Jakob Lenz: His Life and Works (1901; master’s dissertation) and J.-J. Rousseau and the Literary Movement of the Late 18th and Early 19th Centuries (1910; doctoral dissertation). He also published works on Pushkin’s links with Italian literature. Rozanov was a proponent of the school of cultural history in literary scholarship. He had a broad knowledge of his field and a profound interest in the social basis of literature.
