Rozanov, Vladimir Nikolaevich 

Born Dec. 3(15), 1872, in Moscow; died there Oct. 16, 1934. Soviet surgeon. Hero of Labor (1923).

Rozanov graduated from the medical faculty of Moscow University in 1896. In 1910 he organized and became head of the surgical division at Soldatenkov Hospital in Moscow (now the S. P. Botkin Hospital). In 1929 he became head of the surgical division of the Kremlin Hospital. On Apr. 23, 1922, Rozanov operated on V. I. Lenin and removed the bullet that had been lodged in Lenin’s body since Aug. 30, 1918, when an attempt was made on Lenin’s life. Rozanov organized courses for the advanced surgical training of physicians in 1927. In 1931 he became head of the subdepartment of surgery at the Central Institute for the Advanced Training of Physicians.

Rozanov’s principal works dealt with abdominal and craniocerebral surgery, the surgical treatment of diseases of the endocrine system and kidneys, orthopedics, and the organization of public health. The tenth building of the S. P. Botkin Hospital was named in honor of Rozanov in 1925. Rozanov was awarded the Order of Lenin.
