Różewicz, Tadeusz 

Born Oct. 9, 1921, in Radomsko. Polish writer.

In 1943 and 1944, Różewicz served in the partisan detachment of the Armia Krajowa (Home Army). After 1945 he studied art history at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. His first work appeared in print in 1938. His poetry collections include Anxiety (1947), The Anonymous Voice (1961), and The Face (1964). Various short stories have been collected in The Trees Have Shed Their Leaves (1955), The Interrupted Examination (1960), Excursion to a Museum (1966), and Death Amidst Old Stage Props (1970). Among his collections of plays are The Laocoon Group (1961), The Witnesses (1962), and The Interrupted Act (1964). Różewicz’s principal themes are the spiritual devastation caused by war, moral responsibility for the fate of mankind, and the search for a way out of the tragic conflicts of modern life.

Różewicz was awarded the State Prize of the Polish People’s Republic in 1955 and 1966.
