Rozhanskii, Nikolai Apollinar’evich 

Born June 16 (28), 1884, in Kiev; died Nov. 25, 1957, in Rostov-on-Don. Soviet physiologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1945). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1947).

In 1909, Rozhanskii graduated from the University of Kiev. From 1910 to 1912 he studied the sleep mechanism in I. P. Pavlov’s laboratory. From 1912 to 1916 he worked at Moscow University. He began teaching at the University of Rostov in 1916, becoming a professor in 1921.

Rozhanskii’s principal works dealt with the physiology of digestion, blood circulation, and sleep and with general physiology and the physiology of work and nutrition. Rozhanskii was particularly interested in the functions of the deep structures (subcortical ganglia) of the brain and the role of these structures in higher nervous activity.
