Rozwadowski, Jan Michał
Born Dec. 7, 1867, in Czarna, near Tarnów; died Mar. 13, 1935, in Warsaw. Polish linguist. Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1903). Rozwadowski was a student at the universities of Kraków and Leipzig from 1885 to 1889. In 1900 he became a professor at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. He served as president of the Polish Academy of Sciences from 1925 to 1929. Rozwadowski studied comparative and historical Indo-European and Slavic linguistics, investigating problems of classical philology, the original homeland of the Indo-Europeans and Slavs, Slavo-Baltic and Slavo-Iranian relations, and Slavic onomastics and etymology. He also did work in Polish philology and general linguistics, including semantics, psychology, and the developmental principles of language. He became the first president of the Polish Linguistic Society in 1925 and was one of the founders of the journals Rocznik slawistyczny (Slavic Annual) and Język polski (The Polish Language). He was a member of many European academies of sciences and a foreign member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1911). WORKSWortbildung und Wortbedeutung.
