Rubus Nessenis

    0.01 sec.
Rubus Nessenis

(formerly R. suberectus), a plant of the family Rosaceae. It is a subshrub measuring up to 3 m tall, with erect stems and mostly quinary leaves. The stems and petioles of the leaves have purple-black thorns. The large white flowers are in few-flowered inflorescences. The fruit, which is reddish black and shiny, contains many stones. The plant resembles the blackberry, but its fruits do not have a gray bloom and the first-year shoots are faceted, not cylindrical. Rubus nessensis grows in Western Europe and along the edges of forests, among bushes, and on riverbanks in the middle zone of the European USSR. The fruit is used in preserves, jams, marmalades, jellies, and juices. The Russian name for this species (kumanika) is sometimes applied to the blackberry and other species of the genus Rubus.
