Rudistae
an extinct order of bivalve mollusks that existed in the Late Jurassic and in the Cretaceous. The mollusks had an asymmetric shell, with one valve usually attaching to underwater objects and reaching a height sometimes of 1.5 m. They inhabited shallow depths in warm seas and often formed colonies with corals. There were about 100 species. The mollusks serve as good index fossils for the comparison of Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous deposits. They are of interest in discerning the paths of development of bivalve mollusks.
