Rudnev, Mikhail Matveevich 

Born Oct. 31 (Nov. 12), 1837, in Tula; died Dec. 10 (22), 1878, in Moscow. Russian pathological anatomist.

In 1860, Rudnev graduated from the St. Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy. He worked with R. Virchow and others outside of Russia. In 1867 he became a professor and held the chair of pathological anatomy at the St. Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy. Rudnev also taught pathological anatomy at the Veterinary Institute from 1869 and at the Higher Women’s Courses from 1872. In 1866 he introduced the practical study of pathological histology in Russia.

Rudnev published the Zhurnal dlia normal’noi i patologicheskoi gistologii, farmakologii i klinicheskoi meditsiny from 1870 to 1878. His principal works dealt with tuberculosis, trichinosis, amyloidosis, tumors, and experimental pathology. He wrote an original manual on pathological anatomy. Rudnev was vice-president of the Society of Russian Physicians from 1870 to 1872. He founded a school of pathological anatomy, whose adherents included V. A. Afanas’ev, K. N. Vinogradov, N. P. Ivanovskii, and V. P. Krylov.
