Rudolf Diesel (1858-1913) was granted a patent for the invention of the diesel engine in 1892.
In fact, when Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine in 1903, it ran on peanut oil--diesel fuel as we know it was developed to use the nasty leftovers from oil refining.
The diesel engine is edging into its second century; German engineer Rudolf Diesel patented his design in 1892.
