Fittig, Rudolph

Born Dec. 6, 1835, in Hamburg; died Nov. 19, 1910, in Strasbourg. German organic chemist.

Fittig graduated from the University of Göttingen in 1858. He was a professor at the University of Tübingen from 1870 and the University of Strasbourg from 1876 to 1902. Fittig’s main works dealt with the structure and synthesis of aromatic hydrocarbons. In 1864, Fittig proposed a method of preparing aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons using the Wurtz reaction. He studied phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and lactones. He also worked on problems in stereochemistry.
