Rufiji

a river in East Africa, in Tanzania. Formed by the confluence of the Luwegu and Kilombero rivers, whose sources are in the mountains to the east of Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi), the Rufiji empties into the Indian Ocean. It is approximately 1,400 km long from the source of the Luwegu and drains an area of 178,000 sq km. Fed by rain, the river overflows in the summer and fall; maximum flow rates occur from March through May. The rivers forming the Rufiji are full of rapids and are unnavigable; the Rufiji itself, below the Siguri Falls, flows through a lowland in a wide valley and is accessible to river vessels.
