Rui Barbosa

Barbosa, Rui 

Born Nov. 5, 1849; died Mar. 1, 1923. Brazilian political figure. One of the leaders of the abolitionist movement in Brazil from the late 1860’s to the 1880’s.

Barbosa participated in the overthrow of the monarchy (1889) and held the post of minister of finance and justice in the first republican government. He was one of the authors of the republican Constitution of 1891 and also of the Civil Code of Brazil. He was a candidate for the presidency in 1909 and 1919; he was a senator to the end of his life. A brilliant orator and publicist, he left many works on the jurisprudence and history of his country.
