Rungis 

a city in France, in the department of Val-de-Marne; suburb of Paris. Population, 8,000 (1968). In 1969 the Greater Paris central wholesale food market (formerly Les Halles) was opened in Rungis. The commercial complex covers an area of 625 hectares and has its own production shops, warehouses, and railroad stations. The market itself covers an area of 204 hectares. In 1972 as many as 12,000 people worked permanently in the complex.

The setting of one of Emile Zola's novels, Les Halles was a 12th century marketplace that was razed when the food sellers moved to Rungis in the 1970s, leaving something of a black hole in the heart of the capital.
During their stay in Paris, they visit the city's giant larder, the Rungis market which is the biggest in Europe, and check out the high-speed TGV rail control centre.
