It was Carol who kept the Steindler fight name alive after his death - driving from her former home in upscale Westlake Village to rub shoulders with the Runyonesque characters and world-class fighters training and hanging out at the famous gym at 3rd and Main streets downtown. In 1927, located on West 52 Street in New York City, Gallagher's was the first speakeasy-a Runyonesque gathering place for gamblers, sports figures, showbiz folk and other stars of the Broadway firmament. Our concern was that by coming back for a 16th season, Elway was needlessly fiddling with a perfectly Runyonesque ending. |
