In northeastern TX, east of Tyler; organized Jan 16, 1843 from Nacogdoches County. Name Origin: For Gen. Thomas Jefferson Rusk (1803-57), chief justice of the Republic of TX supreme court (1838-42), signer of the TX Declaration of Independence (1836), and U.S. senator (1846-57).

Area (sq mi): 938.62 (land 923.55; water 15.07). Pop per sq mi: 51.90.
Pop 2005: 47,971. State rank: 63. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.30%; 1990-2000 8.30%. Pop 2000: 47,372 (White 71.20%; Black or African American 19.20%; Hispanic or Latino 8.40%; Asian 0.20%; Other 5.60%). Foreign born: 4.40%. Median age: 38.10.

    In northwestern WI, northeast of Saint Paul, MN; organized May 15, 1901 as Gates County from Chippewa County; name changed Jun 19, 1905. Name Origin: For Col. Jeremiah McLain Rusk (1830-93), an officer in the Civil War, statesman, governor of WI (1882-89), and U.S. secretary of agriculture (1889-93).
