Russell, George (Allan) (1923–  ) composer, pianist, theorist; born in Cincinnati. Active from his youth in both jazz and classical music, he wrote the influential theory book The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization (2nd ed. 1959) and composed in a variety of idioms usually reflecting his own African-American tradition.
