Russell Cave National Monument

National Monument, northeastern Alabama, U.S. Located south of the Alabama-Tennessee border, the monument constitutes part of a cavern that was discovered c. 1953. The cave is about 210 ft (64 m) long, 107 ft (33 m) wide, and 26 ft (8 m) high. It contains an almost continuous record of human habitation dating to at least 7000 BC. The national monument was established in 1961.

Size: 310 acres.
Established: Proclaimed on May 11, 1961.
Location: 8 miles west of Bridgeport, Alabama. From US 72, take CR 75 north 1 mile to CR 98, then CR 98 north 4 miles.
Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities: Guided cave tours, hiking, craft demonstrations.
Special Features: An almost continuous archeological record of human habitation from at least 6500 BC to about AD 1650 (Transitional Paleo to Mississippian cultural periods) is revealed in this cave.
