Russov, Fedor Karlovich 

Born Apr. 2 (14), 1828, in Tallinn; died July 9 (22), 1906, in St. Petersburg. Russian ethnographer and art scholar.

In 1851, Russov graduated from the faculty of history and philology at the University of St. Petersburg. He entered government service in Revel and from 1860 to 1863 was editor of Revel’skaia gazeta (Revel Newspaper). In 1863, Russov settled in St. Petersburg, where he headed the department of engravings and drawings at the Hermitage Museum from 1875 to 1888. In 1865 he became curator and in 1874 scientific curator at the Ethnographical Museum of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Russov enlarged and systematized the museum’s collections, compiling the Guide to the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in 1891.
