Rustamov, Gamid Alievich 

Born Sept. 15, 1911, in the village of Aksai, in what is now Khasaviurt Raion, Dagestan ASSR. Soviet Kumyk playwright, director, and actor. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1945.

Rustamov graduated from the Makhachkala Theater and Music Technicum in 1930 and the State Institute of Theatrical Arts in 1940. He became an actor in 1930. From 1940 to 1951 he was principal director of the A. P. Salavatov Kumyk Theater of Music and Drama in Makhachkala; he resumed this position in 1956.

Rustamov staged Fatuev’s The Mountaineers (1940), Salava-tov’s Aigazi (1940, 1955, and 1963), Shakespeare’s Othello (1946), R. Iagore’s The Daughter of the Ganges (1957), Iakh’iaev’s Irchi Kazak (1964) and Through the Storm (1970), and Ataev’s Soltan Said (1970). Rustamov has written several plays that have been staged by Dagestan theaters.

Rustamov became chairman of the Dagestan branch of the All-Russian Theatrical Society in 1968. He received the A. P. Salavatov Republic Prize in 1959 and the G. Tsadasa Prize in 1967. He has been awarded two orders and various medals.
