Rutuls
a people living chiefly in Rutul Raion of the Dagestan ASSR; others live in the Azerbaijan SSR. They number more than 12,000 (1970 census). The Rutul language is one of the Dagestan languages. Those who profess a religion are Sunni Muslims. In their material and nonmaterial culture, the Rutuls are similar to the Lezghians and other peoples inhabiting the basin of the upper Samur River. The chief sector of their economy is livestock raising (mainly sheep); they also engage in agriculture, including horticulture. REFERENCENarody Kavkaza, vol. 1.
