(monastic name Ilarion; real name Jo-van). Born Sept. 1, 1832, in Sremska Mitrovica; died Aug. 8, 1905, in Grgeteg Monastery, Srem region. Serbian historian and medievalist.

Ruvarac graduated from the law faculty of the University of Vienna in 1856 and from the theological academy at Sremski-Karlovci in 1859. He was a teacher at the Karlovci Gymnasium. Ruvarac became a monk in 1861. From 1872 he was a professor at the theological academy in Sremski-Karlovci, and from 1875 to 1882, the academy’s rector. In 1874 he became an archimandrite.

Ruvarac was the founder of the scientific-critical school in Serbian bourgeois historiography. He worked on specific questions of medieval ecclesiastical and political history in Serbia and the Balkans, and he refuted many questionable and improbable historical notions.
