An empirical formula for the wave numbers of various lines of certain spectral series such as neutral hydrogen and alkali metals; it states that the wave number of thenth member of the series is λ-R/(n+a)2, where λis the series limit,Ris the Rydberg constant of the atom, andais an empirical constant.
