Rydberg series formula [′rid‚bərg ¦sir·ēz ‚fȯr·myə·lə]

(spectroscopy)

An empirical formula for the wave numbers of various lines of certain spectral series such as neutral hydrogen and alkali metals; it states that the wave number of thenth member of the series is λ_∞-R/(n+a)², where λ_∞is the series limit,Ris the Rydberg constant of the atom, andais an empirical constant.
