Ryzhikov, Konstantin Minaevich 

Born Sept. 13 (26), 1912, in Smolensk. Soviet helminthologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1945.

Ryzhikov graduated from the Smolensk Pedagogical Institute in 1937. He was a student of K. I. Skriabin. In 1946 he began working at the Helminthology Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, becoming its director in 1963.

Ryzhikov’s principal works have dealt with the biological problems of helminthology, including the fauna, morphology, taxonomy, and ecology of the helminths of domestic and commercially hunted animals, mainly birds. He studied syngamids, which are a group of nematodes that parasitize the respiratory organs of birds and mammals, and the phenomenon of reservoir parasitism in helminths.

Ryzhikov has been awarded three orders, including one foreign order, and various medals.
