Merionethshire (mĕr'ēŏn`əthshər, –shĭr'), former county, NW Wales. In 1974 most of Merionethshire became part of the nonmetropolitan county of Gwynedd Gwynedd , county, 984 sq mi (2,548 sq km), NW Wales. Established as a county in 1974 through the union of Anglesey, Caernarvonshire, and parts of Denbighshire and Merionethshire, Gwynedd was reduced in 1996 by the separation of Anglesey and the loss of its

Merionethshire 

a former county in northwestern Wales, in the basin of the Wnion and Dee rivers. Area, 1,700 sq km; population, 35,300 (1971). The administrative center was Dolgellau. In 1974, Merionethshire became part of the new county of Gwynedd.
