(2) (Inches Per Second) The measurement of the speed of tape passing by a read/write head or paper passing through a pen plotter.

(3) (IPS) (Intrusion Prevention System) Software that prevents an attack on a network or computer system. An IPS is a significant step beyond an IDS (intrusion detection system), because it stops the attack from damaging or retrieving data. Whereas an IDS passively monitors traffic by sniffing packets off a switch port, an IPS resides inline like a firewall, intercepting and forwarding packets. It can thus block attacks in real time. (4) (IPS) (In-Plane Switching) An active matrix LCD (TFT LCD) technology developed by Hitachi in the mid-1990s that provides a greater viewing angle and better color reproduction. With subsequent versions branded as "Super TFT," "Super-IPS" (S-IPS), "Advanced Super-IPS," "Enhanced S-IPS" and so on, the IPS liquid crystal molecules become parallel to the front and back panels rather than perpendicular to them when a voltage is applied. Unlike twisted nematic (TN) LCDs, which have electrodes at top and bottom panels, IPS uses an electrode pair at the bottom panel. The extra transistor on the bottom panel blocks more surface and requires a brighter backlight.

IPS Vs. TN

The liquid crystals in an IPS screen twist in the same plane ("in-plane") as the top panels, whereas in the ubiquitous twisted nematic (TN) display, they become more perpendicular to the panels when energized. See LCD subpixels and LCD.
