It is the center of a thriving metropolitan area that includes the cities of Ontario Ontario, city (1990 pop. 133,179), San Bernardino co., S Calif., near Los Angeles, in a region of vineyards; inc. 1891. Manufactures include aircraft and aircraft parts, aerospace vehicle parts, sporting and leather goods, wine, electrical equipment, and plastics.

Among the many manufactures are steel, iron, and related products; aerospace, electronic, and electrical goods; and food items. The area was visited (1772), named (1810), and first settled by Spanish explorers. A colony of Mormons arrived in the early 1850s and plotted the present city. It is the seat of California State Univ. San Bernardino. The city is also the headquarters of the San Bernardino National Forest, which lies to the northeast. Resort and recreational areas are nearby.

San Bernardino is the center of an agricultural region, which is noted primarily for its citrus fruits. The manufacturing industry employs 56,000 people (1973). San Bernardino has an electronics industry, an aerospace industry, a food industry, an oil-refining industry, and a chemical industry; it also has ferrous metallurgy and metalworking. Because of its salubrious climate, San Bernardino is a well-known resort area.
