SIMD

(Single Instruction stream Multiple Data stream) A computer that performs one operation on multiple sets of data. It is typically used to add or multiply eight or more sets of numbers at the same time for multimedia encoding and rendering as well as scientific applications. Hardware registers are loaded with numbers, and the mathematical operation is performed on all registers simultaneously.

SIMD capability was added to the Pentium CPU starting with the Pentium MMX chip and enhanced in subsequent Pentiums (see MMX and SSE). Array processors are machines specialized for SIMD operations (see array processor).

SIMD
(computer science)
A type of multiprocessor architecture in which there is a single instruction cycle, but multiple sets of operands may be fetched to multiple processing units and may be operated upon simultaneously within a single instruction cycle. Acronym for single-instruction-stream, multiple-data-stream.

Evergreen's new Performa III 1GHz provides the processing power of Intel's full Coppermine PIII core--including the latest MMX and SIMD video enhancement instructions (SSE) and 256K of L2 cache memory--for upgrading early Slot 1 Pentium III and Pentium II systems running at 100MHz front side bus speeds (350MHz and higher).
An additional set of 144 new SIMD instructions (called SIMD2) will accelerate video, and the chip will take advantage of Intel's new 400MHz system bus.
Built-in support for conditionals and high-speed inter-lane communications provides more versatility than conventional SIMD architectures.
