SMART HDD

(Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology Hard Disk Drive) A drive technology that reports its own degradation, enabling the operating system to warn the user of potential failure. It was included in IDE drives, starting with the ATA-3 specification. SMART is officially written with periods as "S.M.A.R.T." See IDE.
