Saçayak

Saçayak 

(Tripod), a literary association consisting of three Turkish poets—Orhan Veli Kamk, Oktay Rifat Horozcu, and Melih Cevdet Anday—that inaugurated the democratic trend in Turkish poetry of the 1940’s.

The program of Sacayak was set forth in the book Strange (1941; 2nd ed., 1945), a literary manifesto containing verse by the three poets. The members of Sacayak were in opposition to the Turkish symbolists and advocates of pure art, such as Ahmed Hasim and Yahya Kemal. As opposed to sham meaningfulness and pretentious surface attractiveness, the poets of Sacayak asserted that poetry must be accessible to the people and must express the people’s feelings and attitudes. They avoided rhyme and meter, and consequently their poems gave an impression of being “strange.”
