It is famous for its quality wines. ..... Click the link for more information. is the capital. Saône-Et-Loire a department in eastern France. Area, 8,600 sq km. Population, 562,000 (1975). The capital is Mácon. Industry employs 30 percent of the work force, and agriculture 24 percent (1968). Industries include coal mining at Montceau-les-Mines, metallurgy in Le Creusot and Gueugnon, and machine building (machine tools, electric locomotives, diesel engines for ships, and arms) in Le Creusot and Chalon-sur-Saône; there is also a silk industry in Chalon-sur-Saône. Agriculture is dominated by beef cattle raising, primarily on the Charollais upland, and the production of wine in the Maâonnais region; wheat and corn are grown and swine are raised.
