Sabogal, José 

Born Mar. 19, 1888, in Cajabamba; died Dec. 15, 1956, in Lima. Peruvian painter and graphic artist.

Sabogal studied in Europe from 1909 to 1911 and at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires from 1912 to 1918. Influenced by D. Rivera and J. C. Orozco, he was the founder and leader of indigenismo in Peruvian painting. His decorative paintings are lyrical in mood and depict the life of Indians. They include Canoe on the Amazon (1937) and Huanca Woman (1938). Sabogal also produced murals and wood engravings.
