Sabsai, Pinkhos (Petr) Vladimirovich
Born June 19 (July 7), 1893, in Odessa. Soviet sculptor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1973); member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1947). Member of the CPSU since 1945. Sabsai studied at the Odessa Art School from 1908 to 1915 and at the Leningrad Academy of Arts under G. R. Zaleman and A. T. Matveev from 1922 to 1925. In 1926 he settled in Baku, where he has taught at the A. Azimzade Azerbaijan Art School since 1928. Sabsai has constructed several monuments in bronze and granite, including likenesses of M. F. Akhundov (1930) and S. M. Kirov (1939, S. M. Kirov Park, Baku; State Prize of the USSR, 1942). He has constructed monuments in bronze and granite to V. I. Lenin in Krasnodar (1956) and Baku (1957). Sabsai has executed numerous sculptures of workers, revolutionaries, and cultural figures. His art, which also includes monumental reliefs, is characterized by psychological expressiveness and clean, precise modeling.
